Even as Indian NRIs live in U.K., they prefer Indian girls for marriage/ matrimony. Inter-racial and inter-cultural matrimonies are also common. A number of movies have explored the lives of Indian NRIs around the theme of wedding and arranged marriages. Some of notable ones are - Monsoon Wedding, Bend it like Beckham and East is east.
Indian matrimonies in UK are conducted as much as possible in same traditional manner as they are in India. The wedding process is divided into three phases. The three phases are pre-wedding ceremonies (ladies sangeet, cocktail), marriage day ceremonies and the post-wedding ceremonies. Increasingly, current generation has started to include Western features into their weddings, such as speeches, bachelor party, the first dance and wedding cake etc.
Beautiful and decorated venues host the weddings - house backyards, temples or hotel halls. Brides embellish themselves by putting Indian gold (kundan) and diamond jewelry. They apply henna/ mehndi to color hands and feet, and undergo various bridal makeups. The bride wears a bridal lehenga or sari. The groom typically wears a sherwani dress, a designer suit or a dress as per the community customs. Indian matrimonies in England are always celebrated with great fun, enthusiasm and happiness.
